The much awaited Sri Lanka Premier League 2012 is all set to debut its first season from 10th August to 31st August, 2012. SLPL that was established last year could not continue due to some reasons. This time, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) signed a renewed deal in February, which is sponsored by a Singapore based company - Somerset Entertainment Ventures. SLPL has adopted a system where each team is purchased by the private owners. The matches will be played at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo and Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Kandy. The SLPL 2012 is in partnership with the MCC Spirit of Cricket initiative.
The Sri Lanka Premier League was officially launched at Cinnamon Grand hotel in Colombo in July 2012, which was attended by the cricketers and media personnel. The Chairman of the Sri Lanka Cricket, Upali Dharmadasa announced the addition of two more teams in the coming years to the League. SLPL will have cheerleaders and other entertainment during the tournament like the Indian Premier League. The seven teams will play against each other in the group stage before entering into the knockout stage and the top four teams in the group stage will be qualified to the semi finals. There will be no third place play off in the tournament.
Sri Lanka Premier League 2012 will include both the local and International players. The seven teams are Nagenahira, Wayamba, Ruhuna, Basnahira, Uva, Kandurata and Uthura. Except the Indian players, the League will have players from South Africa, West Indies, New Zealand and Bangladesh. Sri Lanka Premier League will feature some of the experienced players like Shahid Afridi, Brad Hogg, Chris Gayle, Umar Akmal, Albie Morkel, Shoaib Malik, Abdul Razzaq and Shakib Al Hasan.
